Back to the School Yard Workout

grade-school fitness for grown-ups
Burning calories and getting fit doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, if you play like a kid on the playground, you can burn a surprising number of calories while having fun with your children. Here is a quick look at the fun and fitness-friendly activities you can enjoy around the park.

On the swings
When you get on the swing set and really start moving your legs to get as much height as you can on each swing, you can burn about 70 calories in 20 minutes. Plus, you will get a great workout for your legs, which do most of the work on the swing set.

On the monkey bars
Climbing back and forth on the monkey bars will build your upper body strength and incorporate some unique cardio into your fitness routine. When you climb in 45 second spurts with 20 second breaks in between, you can burn up to 200 calories in 7 repetitions. Be sure to climb forward at full speed each time to get the most calorie burn for your workout.

On the tetherball court
Tetherball is a fun activity to enjoy in pairs, and it can have you burning 350 calories per hour simply hitting the ball back and forth. If you don’t have a tetherball court at your local park, hopscotch can burn about the same number of calories.

So the next time your kids are out at the park, don’t just sit on the sidelines, jump in and join them!
