If you are a regular coffee drinker, then you are in good company. According to a 2013 study, the U.S. is the world’s biggest consumer of coffee. About 83 percent of adults drink this caffeinated beverage with 63 percent drinking coffee daily.

Coffee Boosts Your Memory

A recent study showed that coffee can boost your long term memory. Study participants who took 200 mg of caffeine (equivalent to about 1 large coffee) were more able to recall information from the previous day. The researchers found the 200 mg dose was the sweet spot for increased memory, and that higher and lower dosages did not improve memory as well.

Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Stroke

Two separate studies link coffee consumption with a lower risk of stroke. One study found that drinking just one cup of coffee per day could decrease an adult’s risk of stroke by about 20 percent. A second study found that women aged 49 to 83 who drank more than one cup of coffee a day lowered their risk of stroke by 22 to 25 percent.

Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Each year, more and more Americans are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. If this trend continues, by 2050 1 out of every 3 U.S. adults will suffer from diabetes. In addition to healthy diet and exercise, the compounds in coffee may actually lower your risk for type 2 diabetes. According to a recent study, drinking more 4 or more cups of coffee daily can cut your type 2 diabetes risk in half!

When it comes to coffee, you can have too much of a good thing. Remember that caffeine affects everybody differently and the amount of caffeine may vary dramatically from cup to cup. For example, a cup of Starbucks coffee contains about 38 percent more caffeine per fluid ounce than a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee. To reduce the potential negative side effects of caffeine, such as jitteriness and sleeplessness, it’s best to consume coffee in moderation.
