Tips for Staying Cool During Your Summer Workouts
Physical activity is essential for a healthy heart, and it may also help you feel more confident in your summer swimwear. Just remember that when you head outside for a workout during the summertime you will need to take some extra precautions to stay cool and comfortable.
Work out during cooler hours of the day
If you are not an early morning person, you might wait until later in the afternoon when the sun is going down to go out for a jog. Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. the sun is shining its brightest, so avoid these hours when you can. When the weather is particularly hot, you might just head to the gym or lower the intensity of your normal routine.
Wear comfortable and loose clothing
While tight yoga pants and stretchy tank tops may look flattering, they can cause you to overheat faster by getting in the way of your body’s natural cooling system. Loose clothing will allow air to flow along your skin so that sweat effectively cools you down. Light colors like white and yellow are best, because they help reflect the sun’s harsh rays.
Stay hydrated and recharged
Drinking plenty of water is a must for summer workouts, and this means drinking before, during, and after you exercise. Water is not the only consideration, though. You also need to refuel with salts and electrolytes to help your body absorb the water you drink. If you simply don’t feel replenished from water and a sports drink, you should take a break or call off the rest of your workout for the day.
Protect your skin
When setting your course, look for shaded trails or pathways if your activity of choice lends itself to such options. Wearing sunscreen is also a must (even if you are not in direct sunlight.) You might be surprised to learn that you can still suffer sun damage to your skin on days that are cloudy. Be sure to select a sunscreen that meets the new FDA requirements, otherwise you might suffer the unpleasant side effects of a sunburn.
